Biography

John Kinnison, 88, of Ottawa, died Thursday, January 24, at Pleasant View. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 30, in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Davies, Pastor, and the Rev. Peter Ward, chaplain of Pleasant View, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Arrangements are through the Mueller Funeral Home.

John was born on November 11, 1924, in Macon, Illinois, to Ralph Waldo and Nola (Sidner) Kinnison. He was a graduate of Illinois Weslyan University receiving his. B.A. in Education, and his Masters in Music Education. His career spanned five decades, including thirty-two years as Director of Bands and Music Department Supervisor with Ottawa Elementary School Disctrict 141. After retiring from OES, he began a thirteen-year tenure as Executive Director of IMEA. In 1985 he received the IMEA Distinguished Service Award.

He married Eddrie M. Kiddoo on July 27, 1947 at the Abington First United Methodist Church. John was a member of the First United Methodist Church, IMEA, Music Educatorís National Conference, the Illinois Teacherís Association, the Musicianís Union, and a former member of the Ottawa Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by three daughters, Jae Lyn (Chuck) Hepner, of Lexington, Jill (Terry) Jennings, of Ottawa, Jan (Christopher Butler, of Ottawa, one son John Kinnnison, of St. Louis, Missouri, 14 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Eddrie, on September 10, 2010, and one sister Virginia Mallinson.

John Kinnison was a man who has demonstrated dedication to his family and community, commitment to his profession, selflessness in helping others, strong faith and values, and pursuit of excellence. He will be missed by many but his legacy will live on through his children and his many students.
