Samuel Calkins, 68, of Oglesby, passed away Tuesday evening, November 6, 2012, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, November 10 at the Prey-Mueller Funeral Home in Oglesby followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Oglesby with the Rev. Gary Blake, officiating. Burial will be in Deer Park Cemetery where full military rites will be conducted by the LaSalle-Oglesby Veterans Memorial Group. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 9, at the Prey-Mueller Funeral Home with prayers recited at 3:45.

Samuel was born April 4, 1944 in LaSalle to Lyle and Vera (Armstrong) Calkins. He was a 1962 graduate from Tonica High School. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1962-1966. Sam was a truck driver and a member of Teamsters Local 722. He Married Joann McGarvey on September 24, 1966 in Mt. Union, Pennsylvania. He was a member of Holy Family Church and Marine Corps League.

He was survived by his wife, Joann of Oglesby; two children, Amy (Todd) Kassler of Olympia, Washington and Jeff Calkins of Oglesby; three grandchildren, Ashley and Cam Calkins, and Nathan Kassler; one great grandson, Carter Baxter; four sisters, Edna (Chuck) Schiffbauer of Leonore, Sandy (Don) Ribolzi of Oglesby, Sheri (Duane) Dauber of San Diego, California and Marilyn (Bill) Poutre of Utica.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Dick, Arnie, and Gary Calkins.

Pallbearers will be: Todd Kassler, Edward McGarvey, Richard, Dirk, Aaron, and Brian Mertel.
