Obituary for Jack Edward Grant

Jack Edward Grant, 70, of Naperville and Dimmick Township, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM June 12, 2019 at the Mueller Funeral Home, Peru with Rev. Alex Garncarz, pastor of Zion United Church of Christ, Peru officiating. Burial will follow in Peru City Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the LaSalle-Oglesby Veterans Memorial Group. Visitation will be 9-11:00 AM June 12 at the funeral home.

Jack was born September 25, 1948 in Decatur to James A. and Betty J. (Baldwin) Grant. He married Patricia Ann Lange on November 29, 1969 at Zion United Church of Christ, Peru. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Tay Ninh, Vietnam, on the Cambodian border, during the Vietnam War from 1970-71, subsequently teaching fixed station tech control at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

Jack and Patricia lived in Freehold, New Jersey for many years where he was a New Jersey state parole officer and was a member of the Freehold First Aid Squad, bowling league, and baseball team. He was a member of the Naperville Veterans of Foreign Wars Judd Kendall Post 3873 and the LaSalle Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4668. He was a member of the Oglesby Elks for many years and enjoyed working on their bingo nights with his friend, Larry Bianchi. Jack was a member of the Dimmick Consolidated School District Board of Education from 1984-88.

Jack was a graduate of Western Illinois University and was a labor relations negotiator in both New Jersey and Illinois. He was the business mail supervisor for the Mendota Post Office, working with R.R. Donnelly. He enjoyed harness racing at Freehold Raceway, tent camping with Patricia throughout the West and Canada, vacationing in Pagosa Springs, Colorado and New Mexico with his family, and visiting his Army buddy, Phil Colarossi, near Scranton. He admired the late Bill and Audrey Sack very much and had many laughs with Dennis O’Keefe, Bill Johnson, the late Gordon Rogers, Dave Neill, Dennis McConville, and his John’s Place buddies.

Jack is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia and their two daughters, Briar Grant and Lieutenant Commander Christiane (Eric) Weber; grandchildren, Heidi and Nicholas Weber; siblings, William (Amy) Grant, Mark (Mary Kay) Grant, and Richard Grant; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leslie (Carlene) Grant and Timothy Grant.

Pallbearers will be members of the Peru Veterans Memorial Group.
